Results of the Referendum
Report on the Results of the Referendum on the Membership of the
Republic of Slovenia in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO),
held on 23 March 2003

At its 36th meeting held on 1 April 2003, the National Electoral
Committee reviewed the minutes of electoral committees of individual
constituencies on the votes submitted in individual constituencies and
the report of the National Electoral Committee on the votes submitted
at diplomatic representations and consulates of the Republic of
Slovenia and votes sent from abroad by post as part of a referendum on
the membership of the Republic of Slovenia in the North Atlantic
Treaty Organisation (NATO) that was held on 23 March 2003, and
ascertained the following referendum results:
In the referendum that was held on 23 March 2003, a total of
1,613,305 voters had the right to vote, 1,613,272 of whom were
registered in the voters' list, and 33 voters that were by mistake
omitted from the voters' list were able to assert their right to vote
with a certificate.
A total of 974,988 voters cast their votes (60.43%), 974,955
of whom were registered in the voters' list, and 33 voters, who
asserted their right to vote with a certificate.
A total of 974,524 ballots were cast. 9,179 ballots (0.94%
of ballots cast) were invalid because they did not indicate the will
of the voter.
A total of 965,345 ballots were valid.
To the referendum question:
"Do you consent to the membership of the Republic of Slovenia
in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)?"
a total of 637,882 voters, or 66.08% of valid
ballots, voted "YES" and
a total of 327,463 voters, or 33.92% of valid
ballots, voted "NO".

In accordance with the provisions of the second part of the
Constitutional Act on the Amendments to Chapter One and Articles 47
and 48 of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia (Official
Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, no. 24/03) and based on indent
five of Article 39 of the Referendum and Popular Initiative Act
(Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, no. 15/94, 13/95 -
Judgement of the Constitutional Court, 38/96, 43/96 - Judgement of the
Constitutional Court, 59/01 and 11/03 - Judgement of the
Constitutional Court), the National Election Commission ascertained
that the majority of voters that cast valid ballots agree with the
membership of the Republic of Slovenia in the North Atlantic Treaty
Organisation (NATO).
