Slovenia and NATO
Full membership of NATO was a strategic goal that Slovenia set for
itself immediately upon independence. Slovenia has endeavoured to
become a member of NATO because of the fundamental values it shares
with the Alliance, its strategic security interests and its vital
national interests.
All of Slovenia's governments to date and the majority of political
parties have worked toward membership, and this decision has been
confirmed several times in the National Assembly as well. Not least of
all, the citizens of Slovenia have also confirmed this Euro-Atlantic
commitment in a referendum.
NATO membership will make it possible for Slovenia to effectively
face the security challenges that threaten all members of the
international community today. For Slovenia, membership also
represents a responsibility to preserve and strengthen the Alliance's
capacity to effectively respond to modern security challenges.
