Referendum
Slovenia was the only one of the seven NATO candidate countries,
invited to join the Alliance in the upcoming round of enlargement,
which held a referendum on NATO accession.
End of January 2003, the Slovenian parliament decided for
simultaneous referenda on EU and NATO membership, which were held on
23 March 2003.
The two referendum questions read, "Do you agree for the Republic of
Slovenia to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty organisation
(NATO)?" and "Do you agree for the Republic of Slovenia to become a
member of the European Union (EU)?"
The outcome results are binding on the government.
