Public opinion surveys - Slovenia's accession to NATO
The Republic of Slovenia's membership into NATO is a priority task
of Slovene foreign policy and enjoys the support of the governing
coalition as well as of the majority of parliamentary parties.
The results of public opinion surveys performed in recent years by
various research institutions, especially those done by the Faculty of
Social Sciences, show that the majority of respondents support the
idea of membership, but these results oscillate in relation to current
events and reflect wider socio-political developments that influence
views on NATO membership.
According to the most recent public opinion survey, in November
2001, Slovenia's endeavours to join NATO are supported by 53% of
Slovenians. The question in the November survey Politbarometer - will
Slovenia become a NATO member or not? - was given a positive reply by
66.5% of respondents.
