NATO after the Summit, Slovenia after the Invitation
At the NATO Alliance summit that took place in Prague on 21 and 22
November, the leaders of the NATO member countries adopted a number of
decisions that point to a new direction in the development of the
Alliance. The decisions that were adopted confirm the efforts to
respond to the challenges of the 21st century. Form an organisation
founded 53 years ago during the Cold War, the Alliance has transformed
itself into a modern and broad coalition of nations defending peace
and stability in the world.
The Prague Summit was also significant for seven candidate
countries for NATO membership: Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania,
Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, which were invited to join the
Alliance at Prague. An intensive process of final preparations for
membership awaits these countries up to the next summit in 2004.
