Calendar of activities by Slovenia from invitation to membership
21 November 2002 - In his opening statement at the NATO Alliance's Prague
Summit, Lord Robertson invited Slovenia for membership in the Alliance, together
with six other candidate countries.
25 November 2002 - On behalf of the government of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr.
Dimitrij Rupel responded to the letter by NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson,
which formally extended an invitation to Slovenia to begin the process of accession to
the North Atlantic Treaty.
5 December 2002 - The Slovenian government named a group to be responsible for
accession talks with the NATO Alliance. It will be led by Samuel Zbogar, State
Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
21 January 2003 - The first round of accession talks will be dedicated to political,
economic and defence issues.
31 January 2003 - The second round of accession talks will be dedicated to
technical issues and will address security, legal matters and resources.
March 2003 - Following final accession talks, Slovenia will send the NATO Alliance a
letter with a schedule for the implementation of agreed-upon reforms and capabilities.
End of March 2003 - After receiving the letter, the permanent representatives of the
NATO member countries will sign the accession protocol. After the signing, Slovenia
will begin to participate in the majority of NATO committees and other working
bodies. The Permanent Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Group will likewise
include in its work parliamentary representatives from the invited countries.
Starting April 2003 - The signing of the accession protocols will signal the beginning
of the ratification process in NATO member countries. The accession protocols will
enter into force when all signatories to the Treaty of Washington have notified the
United States, which is the treaty's depository, that the ratification process is
complete.
Autumn 2003 - Formation and delivery of the Annual National Programme - Fifth
Cycle for the implementation of the NATO Membership Action Plan.
May 2004 - Slovenia will become a NATO member country when it deposits its
document on accession to the Treaty of Washington. After accession to the Treaty of
Washington, Slovenia will accede to NATO's "acquis", which defines the operations
of member countries of the NATO Alliance.
