Slovenia at the Istanbul Summit
For the first time, Slovenia is attending a NATO Summit as a full
member of the Alliance. The decisions that have so far been adopted
at the Istanbul Summit have met Slovenia's expectations. Slovenia
welcomed the transfer of sovereignty from the Coalition Provisional
Authority to the Iraqi Interim Government. NATO's decision to offer
assistance to the Iraqi government with the training of the Iraqi
security forces means that Slovenia will be able to upgrade its
participation in the training of the Iraqi police officers, which is
being carried out in Jordan. In doing so, Slovenia does not intend to
engage its forces on the territory of Iraq. Furthermore, Slovenia
took opportunity of the Istanbul Summit to announce its intention to
strengthen its engagement in the Balkans.
In addition, it officially acceded to the commitments concerning
the development of NATO operational capabilities adopted at the Prague
Summit. Apart from actively contributing to NATO operations, Slovenia
also endeavours to fulfil the expectations regarding the development
of military capabilities, as expressed in the development objectives
to be achieved by 2010.
