Past operations involving the Slovenian Armed Forces
Slovenia has been actively participating in NATO and UN-led
peacekeeping operations since 1997. It was then that the first
Slovenian Armed Forces contingent was sent abroad, when its soldiers
participated in the ALBA (SUNRISE) peacekeeping operation in Albania.
Service members of the Slovenian Armed Forces have also taken part
in the following:
- ALBA (SUNRISE) humanitarian operations
- ALLIED HARBOUR in Albania
- UNFICYP peacekeeping mission in Cyprus
- UNMIK support mission to the interim administration in Kosovo.
Humanitarian Operations in Albania
From 14 May to 27 July 1997 a Slovenian Armed Forces medical unit
with 21 service members took part in the ALBA (SUNRISE) operation as
part of FMP international forces. Its assignment was to provide
medical care for units and prepare the injured for evacuation.
From 30 May to 14 July 1999 a medical unit with 27 service members
took part in a humanitarian operation in Albania as a composite part
of AFOR international peacekeeping forces in the NATO-led ALLIED
HARBOUR operation. Their assignments included the provision of medical
care for the civil population and AFOR service members, and support
for civil authorities and humanitarian organisations supplying
refugees.
UNFICYP Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus
Slovenia participated in the UNFICYP (United Nations Forces in
Cyprus) peacekeeping mission from September 1997 to 19 July
2001. Twenty-seven service members of the Slovenian Armed Forces
served in the Austrian-Hungarian-Slovenian Battalion. Their mission
was to patrol the observation points on the eastern part of the island
and the demarcation line between the Greek and Turkish parts of the
island. This operation was the commencement of training for Slovenian
Armed Forces service members for more demanding peace support
operations.
UNMIK Support to the Interim Administration in Kosovo
From October 1999 to December 2000 an officer of the Slovenian
Armed Forces participated in UNMIK (the United Nations Interim
Administration Mission in Kosovo), where he performed tasks within the
Demining Coordination Centre.
