The Ratifications

The official integration of the new members is expected in May 2004, after the ratification in the parliaments of the 19 present members and of the future members.

France

The French Parliament has ratified the NATO accession protocols on 29 January 2004 allowing NATO to be enlarged by seven new members, including Slovenia. France is the last member of NATO to ratify accession protocols and so ended the ratification for new members.

Belgium

The Belgium Parliament on 27 November 2003 backed NATO's expansion by seven new members.

Turkey

The turkish parliament backed Slovenia's accession to NATO on 6 November 2003.

Greece

On 6 November 2003 Greece ratified the accession protocols for seven NATO members.

United Kingdom

The British parliament approved with majority of votes on 30 September 2003 the protocols allowing NATO to be enlarged by seven new members, including Slovenia.

Czech Republic

The Czech parliament approved with majority of votes on 7 August 2003 the protocols allowing NATO to be enlarged by seven new members.

Luxembourg

The NATO accession protocols have been ratified on 9 July 2003.

Poland

The Polish parliament approved the accession protocols on 9 July 2003.

Italy

The Italian senat backed the proposal of ratification of accession protolos for seven new members, including Slovenia on 24 July 2003.

Germany

The german parliament approved with majority of votes on 5 June 2003 the protocols allowing NATO to be enlarged by seven new members. The new member states include Slovakia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Slovenia.

Hungary

The Hungarian government on 2 June 2003 approved the protocols allowing NATO to be enlarged by seven new members. The new member states include Slovakia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Slovenia. A "yes" vote in the Hungarian parliament was given by all 329 lawmakers.

Denmark

The Danish parliament has ratified the NATO accession protocols on 15 May 2003 of Lithuania and six other mostly post-Communist European states, thus blessing their accession to a 19-nation Western defense bloc. A "yes" vote in the Danish parliament was given by majority of the lawmakers, 101, to 4 "against".

U.S.A.

The U.S. Senate on 8 May 2003 formally backed NATO's expansion, voting unanimously that seven aspirants, including Slovenia, could join the military alliance. In a 96:0 vote, the U.S. comes as a third country to ratify the enlargement after Canada and Norway.

Norway

Upon proposal of the Norwegian government, the Norwegian parliament on 11 April 2003 unanimously backed Slovenia's accession to NATO.

Canada

On 28 March 2003, Canada was the first to ratify the accession protocols for seven new NATO members - Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - which were invited to join the Alliance at the Prague summit in November 2002.
