The Referendum Campaign

In 2003 the Government Public Relations and Media Office is continuing its activities in a public awareness campaign dedicated to informing the public in Slovenia and abroad about Slovenia's accession in NATO, and before the referendum it increased its efforts in some regards.

In the final set of public discussions regarding inclusion in the EU and NATO, the government decided to unite both campaigns under the same slogan, "At home in Europe, secure in NATO," because decision of Slovenia to access to both integrations - EU and NATO - are connected and they unify Slovenia's foreign policy aspirations into a whole.

The pre-referendum activities taking place under the new corporate visual identity are:

  • Closer cooperation with the media: Assistance in securing representatives for interviews, face-to-face meetings and roundtable discussions, and providing additional information and materials;

  • Informative publications (NATO after Prague [Acrobat pdf, 1233 Kb], What is NATO [Acrobat pdf, 809 Kb] and At Home in Europe and secure in NATO [Acrobat pdf, 1233 Kb]) and their widest possible distribution;

  • Informative promotional messages in the print media, radio and TV

  • publishing of the text of the North Atlantic Treaty, in the national dailies;

  • Co-financing the jointly produced broadcast of 17 regional radio and 12 regional television stations, in which advocates and opponents participate and present their points of view and arguments;

  • Organising numerous public discussions around Slovenia;

  • Promoting the major information sources (the "Natofon" toll-free line, web site http://nato.gov.si, the "Natonabiralnik" postal address), directing citizens to sources where they can receive additional information about NATO and the process of Slovenian accession to the Alliance.
