Carrying out the Referendum
On 8 March the National Election Commission (NEC) promulgated an
act on calling referenda for Slovenia's entry into the EU and NATO
Alliance in the daily newspapers.
The two referendum questions read, "Do you agree for the
Republic of Slovenia to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty
organisation (NATO)?" and "Do you agree for the Republic
of Slovenia to become a member of the European Union (EU)?"
Voters will vote in such a way that they will circle the word
"for" or "against" on their ballots.
Voting in the referendum will take place 23 March at polling
stations, which will be open between 7 am and 7 pm. For citizens
unable to take part in the voting on 23 March, early voting has been
made possible at special polling stations at the headquarters of the
district election commissions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - 18,
19 and 20 March - between 9 am and 5 pm.
In addition to the general voting that will take place on the
referendum day between 7 am and 7 pm, special forms of voting will
also include voting by mail in Slovenia (if, on the day of voting, the
voter is in hospital or a patient at a health resort, in prison or
under arrest, in a nursing home or serving obligatory military
service), early voting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - 18, 19 and
20 March - between 9 am and 5 pm, and at home (voters that are unable
to appear at the polling station in person because of illness should
inform the district election commission at least three days prior to
the day of voting that they wish to vote before an election committee
at their home).
