The Field Research
The in-depth public opinion poll entitled "National and
International Security" was carried out by the Defence
Studies Research Centre, which is a part of the Social Studies
Institute at the University of Ljubljana. The Institute has been
conducting research into public opinion on various social issues for
the last forty years, while research into public opinion on security
has been carried out for the last twenty years.
The first opinion on Slovenia's national security goes back to the
period when Slovenia was gaining back its independence, between 1990
and 1991. The Defence Studies Research Centre repeated the poll at the
end of 1994 and the beginning of 1995 and, for the first time, factors
relating to Slovenia's potential membership of NATO were included.
Research of this type continued in 1999 when researchers, under the
project entitled Security Integration in Europe, devoted even
more space to European security and defence integration processes. The
1999 poll was conducted among a representative sample of 1050 adult
Slovene citizens between 21 May and 18 June in 420 local areas around
Slovenia. The 2001 poll was conducted among a representative sample
of 1095 adult Slovene citizens between 18 October and 19 November in
420 local areas around Slovenia.
The poll was conducted by skilled and experienced network
personnel, with the use of the "face to face" method, which
means that personnel has visited people at home and asked them
pre-prepared questions.
The Centre for Public Opinion Research and Mass Communications at
the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, carried out
field research from 23 May to 26 June 2002 entitled "Position of Slovenes concerning
accession to the European Union and NATO", within the
framework of Slovene public opinion research. The research was
carried out on a sample of 1711 adult citizens (1123 actually polled)
in 100 polling districts in Slovenia.
