Environmental protection
Industrial and environmental risks and their effects on people's
health and the environment are a major issue that is occupying the
NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (http://www.nato.int/ccms/). The
Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society was founded in 1996 with
the aim of introducing a new social dimension to the Alliance. With
the establishment of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the
Partnership for Peace, it acquired much greater importance. This
Committee offers collaborating countries, especially those from the
region of the former Soviet Union, an important window into the world
and an opportunity for the cooperation of their science and research
institutions within the framework of international exchange. The
Committee's work is conducted primarily through three- to five-year
studies and shorter projects as well as through conferences and
workshops.
