Alex Standish
Alex Standish is the editor of Jane's Intelligence Digest (a Jane's
Information Group publication). He also produces television and radio
documentaries for the BBC and from 1999-2000 was a producer with BBC
Panorama. A graduate of Durham University, he has previously worked as
foreign correspondent for the BBC and The Economist. From 1995-1997 he
was the associate editor of Metal Bulletin and chaired the
International Aluminium Conferences in 1995 and 1996.
He has chaired the Board of Trustees at the Centre for Research
into Post- Communist Economies (CRCE) since 1997. In January 2002 he
was asked To produce a report on the status of minority groups in
Albania for the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI), a
German-based research organisation funded by the German and Danish
governments.
Alex has specialised in the Balkans since 1991 and was resident in
Albania from 1992-1994, working as a consultant for a range of
organisations and companies including the World Bank, Rolls-Royce
Industrial Power Group and British Petroleum. From July 1997 until
January 1998 he was an adviser to the Albanian Prime Minister and
served on the staff of the Council of Ministers in Tirana. In his
capacity as a foreign correspondent he has served in Belgrade,
Budapest, Bucharest, Pristina, Tirana, Skopje and Tehran, and Has
travelled widely throughout the Balkans, eastern Europe and the Middle
East.
Alex's research continues to focus on the Balkans and has been
commissioned by a leading London publisher to write a biography of the
Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha. He regularly speaks at seminars
and conferences on the region and has participated in meetings
organised by the US Joint Analysis Center in Cambridge, the School of
East European & Slavonic Studies (SEESS) and CRCE.
His publications include 'Kosovo One Year On: The Crisis and its
Consequences' (CRCE, 2000) and an essay in 'Albanian Identities'
(C.Hurst, 2002).
